mark making

In this assignment we were asked to look at “mark making” and different drawing styles of artists in relation to drawing the human figure.

Different artists have many different drawing techniques, an example of this is measuring the head and making marks or start drawing a skeleton and filling in the details to mark a full human.

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci, when he paints, would start off by painting an under painting in either grey or brown. By doing this the under painting would also show through the painting later, creating the form. After he would apply colours in thin transparent layers of paint; he would use very dull colours within a narrow tone range. He wouldn’t use intense colours, because he didn’t want to make a big contrast in his painting. In terms of lighting in his painting he would make it soft and gentle, so the facial features weren’t strongly defined or outlined. Leonardo also had a technique of softening colour and edges with thin layer of colours blended in to each other so the drawing didn’t have sharp outline or hard edges.

Banksy

Bansky is a street artist, who uses the technique of stencils and spray cans. Stencils are thin sheets that contain a shape cut out of them, allowing an accurate outline when creating a picture. Banksy, who creates his stencils, uses spray paint to fill in the picture. A common element of his art work would be using black and white to create a contrast and using colour to make it stand out.

Alex Ross

Alex Ross is a comic book artist that has worked for “Marvel” and “DC”. In order to get his proportions right, he would draw construction line in the shape of what he was planning to draw, after he completed that element of the drawing he would fill in the body, using shapes.

I will now try to do drawing in the same way Alex Ross does.

Learning outcome

By doing this assignment I learned that many different artists have different ways of drawing, and that no matter how good you are, you will also need to make some type of marks, in order to get a more accurate drawing. From doing this I now am more encouraged to practice mark making when I draw.
