3DDS characters

3DDS 3 character designs

For 3DDS we were ask to create 3 2D character designs and give them a story. To do this we have to use the skill we learned from life drawing and all the studies we did about human anatomy. When starting this project I looked at different methods of drawing as well as genre such as SCFI and animals. Another important element we learned before creating our design was learning about value and proposition.
As part of our study we were asked to create drawings of the character from different views, before we started our final designs. The reason why this is important is it is hard when drawing the character in different poses without a good idea of what they look like. Here below is my 3 views for each of my character designs.

  How I drew the characters

While doing this I was very worried, due to the fact I am not a very good at freehand drawing. In order to do the drawing I used a technique I learned in life drawing, where you draw the shapes of the body parts and then add detail after. Here is an example

I drew the body out using circles and triangles, in order to get the basic shape.

I then started to add details, while removing parts of the shapes so they would look more like body parts

I continued to this next drawing.

After the drawing was finished I added colour.

 Characters
Future solider.

The first character design I did was a solider in the future. When going about this I looked at science fiction in films as well as graphic novels and TV series. The whole idea about this character was to make a soldier who would wear a type of armour that was tight and small so it would be easy to move in, while still being protected, I added a cape so the whole idea was it could be used as a way of gliding. The story of the character would be a guy who has enlisted in the army to fighting aliens, in a war about materials form different planets.

Fairy

The next character I decided to draw was a female fairy. I found this the easy one to create because I feel I am better at drawing the female body structure than the male one. When going about this I decided to look at fantasy and insects, in order to get an idea of wings. The story form this character was it was a local inhabitant of the planet the army was invading, which getting capture in the fighting.

Alien knight

The final character I created was an alien in armour. My idea was on the planet, dolphins were the dominate species that evolved and they were in a sort of medieval period. When going about making this character I looked at knights and dolphins. The story for this character was it would be a knight protecting the planet from the human invasion.

What I learned

By doing this I learned about human proportions, that males tend to be 8 head height, while girls are 7.5 head height. I also learned about the different body types and how they look.

If I were to do it again

I felt my drawing has improved significantly by doing this module; however I am still not happy with it. I felt my drawings were not very well coloured and shaded, and my drawing skills are still not very good. I felt like I should have done more and longer life drawing sessions in order to improve in drawing and adding value to the finished work.
